Vienna Terror Attack: One Dead and Several Others Maimed in Shootings Scross Austria Capital

In what is suspected to be a planned terror attack committed by multiple individuals, at least one person is believed to have been killed and several others wounded after shots were fired near a synagogue in Vienna.


A police officer has been shot and is in critical shape, reports Kronen Zeitung, an Austrian news source.


There are also rumors that hostages are being kept outside the synagogue at a Japanese restaurant.


One person has been arrested, although the police are thought to have killed a second suspect. Austrian Minister of the Interior Karl Nehammer says that the authorities are already chasing many criminals who live in the region at large.

In Vienna 's central First District, the people were advised to avoid the region as well as to refrain from using public transport.


The official Viennese Police Twitter account stated: "Shots fired in the Inner City area-people wounded-Stay AWAY from all public areas or public transport."


Austrian journalist Thomas Mayar, citing the Ministry of the Interior, tweeted: "One dead and several injured in an attack on the synagogue in Seitenstettengasse in the centre of Vienna, says the Ministry of the Interior. Large-scale police operation. Stay in the houses. Shots on Schwedenplatz."


Hostages are reportedly being held at Akakiko restaurant on Mariahilfer Strauss, near to where the shooting is believed to have taken place.


There are also reports of gunmen at a Hilton hotel in the area.


Mr Nehammer has told ORF TV the incident is believed to be a terror attack and that several perpetrators are thought to be behind it.
